What happens at a Catholic funeral

A Catholic funeral typically consists of three key components: the Vigil, the Funeral Mass, and the Rite of Committal.

The Vigil

Also known as the wake or rosary service, the Vigil is a time for family and close friends to gather and pay their respects before the Funeral Mass. This service is usually held at the church or a funeral home and is led by a priest. It’s an opportunity for loved ones to share memories and offer eulogies.

The Funeral Mass

The Funeral Mass begins with a procession led by the priest, where pallbearers carry the casket to the altar. The priest then recites opening prayers, reads passages from the Bible, and offers Holy Communion. After the final prayers, the casket is carried by the pallbearers either to a waiting vehicle or directly to the burial site.

The Rite of Committal

The Rite of Committal usually takes place at the cemetery, where the priest performs the final rites and commits the body to the earth. If the family has chosen cremation, the committal may occur on the day of the funeral or a few days later.
